Sam Carpenter
Entrepreneur, Author, Speaker, and Founder of Centratel, LLC
Building Centratel
Sam founded Centratel Answering Service in Bend, Oregon, in 1984. More than four decades later, he continues to lead his team as CEO, building a unique “call-capture” telephone answering service around two straightforward principles: first, every incoming call is an opportunity, and how it’s handled matters. And, in these days of auto-answering, “people prefer to talk to people, not machines.”
People prefer to talk to people, not machines.
Under Sam’s leadership, the very high-tech Centratel has developed a counterintuitive yet traditional “human-first” approach to telephone answering that emphasizes live human interaction through U.S.-based, career, paid-by-performance professional telephone receptionists, not AI voice agents or conventional voicemail trees. Instead of treating incoming calls as interruptions to be processed, Sam and his staff view them as critical points of contact between their business clients and their callers. Every incoming call matters.
Work the System
Sam’s thinking about business extends beyond telecommunications. He is the author of Work the System: The Simple Mechanics of Making More and Working Less, first published in 2008 and now in its fifth edition. The book offers a practical approach to business management: slow down, step back from endless firefighting, examine how underlying systems work, and improve them incrementally so results become consistent and not dependent on constant managerial intervention.
The philosophy grew out of Sam’s own experience operating Centratel. He came to recognize that most business problems are not isolated incidents requiring individual solutions; they are symptoms of systems that need to be improved “one layer deeper.” By documenting how work is performed, clarifying responsibilities, and refining underlying processes, business owners can build organizations that run super-effectively without managing every detail personally.
The Systems Mindset
His second book, The Systems Mindset: Managing the Machinery of Your Life, published in 2016 and with the 2nd edition to be published in 2027, extends this way of thinking beyond business into everyday life.
Professional Background
Sam’s professional background is unusually broad. His experience spans engineering, land surveying, forestry, construction management, journalism, publishing, property management, and telecommunications, along with an array of blue-collar and white-collar roles. That mix of hands-on experience and analytical thinking shapes his approach to running a business: carefully manage underlying systems so they consistently deliver great results.

Beyond Business
Born and raised in upstate New York, Sam spent more than 40 years in Oregon before relocating to rural south Kentucky in 2020 with his wife, Diana. Outside of business and writing, he enjoys mountaineering, reading, traveling, small-time farming, and long hikes in the Kentucky backcountry with his two hounds.
